Transfer

Project type

Graphic Design

Objective
This university project challenged students to design an original typeface that explored form, texture, and concept. The aim was to create a typeface with a unique visual identity while experimenting with hands-on design processes.

Concept
Transfer is a sans-serif typeface defined by its distinctive textures, created using sticky tape and transferred ink from magazines and newspapers. Areas of transparency within each letterform reveal the process of ink transferring onto the tape, symbolising transformation and progression. The textures create a sense of movement and imperfection, allowing the typeface to convey different meanings depending on the context in which it is used.

Execution
The typeface was developed through an experimental process of layering sticky tape over printed materials and transferring ink onto the tape surface. The resulting textures were then incorporated into the letterforms, creating a tactile and organic visual style that balances structure with imperfection.

Outcome
Transfer is well suited to editorial design, posters, and experimental typography. Its textured aesthetic adds visual depth and creates a more engaging reading experience, whether used in physical formats for bold impact or digitally to explore abstract textures and form.
